This paper deals with the processing of thermal images acquired by the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS (Trieste, Italy) through the infrared camera NEC TS9260, mounted on a specially modified survey aircraft; this camera has a spectral range of 8 – 13 μm and a resolution of 640x380 pixels. Although infrared radiation is not detectable by human eyes, infrared cameras can convert it to a visual image that despites thermal variations across an object in the scene. Images have so necessarily to be correctly georeferred, in order to precisely identify the target on the ground. The main objective of this paper is to describe the aerial survey logistics and the processing that have to be applied to the raw uncorrected thermal images in order to project them from the survey arbitrary coordinate system into a map projected coordinate system.
