Abstract

This Outcome of this ECOPS Euroconference includes the reports of the group discussions which were drafted during the Conference; the major outcomes are brought together in a concluding chapter (35-38), and integrated into a few "Grand Challenges" (39-41), discussed during the final plenary session.

In this work the results of a prognostic hydrodynamic-biological model are compared with experimental data in the Ionian Sea. The hydrodynamics is given by the Bryan Cox 3D primitive equation model adapted to the Mediterranean Sea in the frame of MERMAIDS I by Pinardi and Navarra. After 4 years of spin-up the hydrodynamics is coupled with a conservative primary production model giving the nitrogen cycle in terms of nutrients, phytoplankton and detritus. As initial conditions for the phytoplankton a climatological vertical profile is adopted.. For nutrients the basin mean of the casts of inorganic nitrogen measured during POEM-BC-O91 is selected. Horizontal maps and transects obtained by the model are compared with POEM-BC data. The mean value of the primary productivity, given dynamically by the model, is compared with other estimates, obtained by fluxes computations.
