Distribution, geometry and fades of the seismic sequences in the Ross Sea, integrated by drilling data, have been used to reconstruct some peculiar features of the West Antarctic ice sheet development. Three periods can be recognised: - Before late Oligocene time, when ridges outcropped above sea-level in the Central Ross Sea. The exposed ridges, as well as the Transantarctic Mountains, may have hosted relatively small ice caps. - Between late Oligocene and late Miocene, when tectonic subsidence produced a relative sea-level rise and the onset of open marine conditions over most of the shelf. - From late Miocene to recent, when frequent advances and retreats of the West Antarctic ice sheet produces the reverse and overdeepend profile of the continental shelf.
