Daily ration and diet of the European sardine Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) was investigated in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea). Sardine showed a diurnal feeding periodicity with a peak around sunset. Estimated daily ration was 3.739 g DW/1000gTWW. Microscopic examination of stomach content revealed a diet dominated by teleostean eggs and decapods larvae, followed by copepods. Also tintinnids of the species Tintinnopsis radix were numerically important.
