As a small exploratory step in understanding how research and policy can be better linked in relation to the changing Mediterranean Sea, a workshop was convened in Brussels in October 1996 to gather experts from the oceanographic community (MAST Programme, Mediterranean Targeted Project-II MATER) and from research on socio-economic-policy aspects of the environment (Environment and Climate Programme-Human Dimension Unit). The first community produces data for analysis, modelling and understanding of economic functioning; the second examines the socio-economic causes and impacts of environmental change, including the way policies are formulated and implemented. Abstract
