Distribution of dissolved (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) and total particulate nitrogen (TPN) were investigated during the period June 2003–July 2005, in the Northern Adriatic Sea in relation to the mucilage event. The climatological forcing, the biological production processes and the development of gelatinous aggregates determine the concentration and the temporal variability of dissolved and particulate matter in the basin. DOC/POC ratio can operate to early warning in the processes that drive to the mucilage event.
