We are proposing a new methodology to assess coastal zones based on the integrated analysis of marine and terrestrial areas, while analyzing two “hot spots” on the coast around Trieste, where the housing boom and urban planning are in conflict with the policy of environmental conservation. The approach used is known as Landscape Ecology, which permits a rapid collection of data and its representation in easily readable maps whereby it is possible to obtain a preliminary evaluation of the examined area. The method is particularly appropriate as an instrument to support urban planning and land management.
