In the frame of a joint research with several local institutions, since January 2002 a regular monitoring of optical properties of seawaters of the Natural Marine Reserve of Miramare, Gulf of Trieste, is being carried out, toghether with classical physical, chemical and biological parameters, in order to determine the optical signatures of algal blooms of particular intensity.
